The Complaints Board upheld in part a complaint about the advertising on the Drift Clothing website. A majority of the Board said the phrase “Nothing Made in China” was offensive. A majority of the Board said the phrase “Nothing Made in China” was not misleading.
Description of advertisement
The Drift Clothing website sells premium menswear. Each page of the website includes four symbols with the following words beneath them “Locally Owned”, “Ethically Sourced” “High Quality Goods” and “Nothing Made in China”. The text “Nothing Made in China“ has an image of the cancel symbol imposed over the words “Made in China” above it.
Summary of the complaint
The Complainant was concerned the slogan “Nothing Made in China” carried discriminatory undertones against a specific country and its people and was misleading, because brands listed on the website are manufactured in China.
